Should You Apply Product to Damp Skin or Dry Skin? 平時使用護膚品應該用係乾皮膚定微濕皮膚上面?

Should you apply product to damp skin or dry skin

First, when we say “damp” skin we mean slightly dampened and not sopping wet. Right after a shower or after cleansing, give your skin a little time (around 5 minutes) to dry naturally in order to achieve “slightly dampened” skin. Or if you prefer, you can still towel dry your face and then use a gentle face mist to give a boost of moisture before applying the rest of your skin care routine.

Okay, but why? And is it the same for all products?

Why damp skin? You can think of your skin like a kitchen sponge. When it’s damp it’s better at soaking things up than a hard, dry sponge. In other words, skin is more permeable when it’s slightly damp and can “soak up" skin care products better. So this will help you to get the maximum benefits from your products! This is true for both emollients and occlusives and particularly true for serums, moisturizers and oils.

There are some exceptions worth mentioning. The most important exception is sunscreen. Since sunscreen needs to form a layer of protection on your skin it’s best to apply it to dry skin (or after your other products have fully dried). Also, for prescription strength topical skin care products like retinoids or acne medications it is best to apply these to dry skin in order to have a more controlled application since these products can cause irritation, redness, or peeling. The same goes for AHAs/BHAs. So for these kinds of products it’s best to follow the manufacturer’s directions and your doctor’s advice.

Bonus tip! The same advice is true for body oils or moisturizers too! So right out of the shower you can also apply these products all over your body.
